The Stigma Associated with Wearing Hearing Aids

Being told you need hearing aids can bring up a lot of emotions. For many people, concerns about aging, appearance, and what others might think create a stigma that becomes a barrier to seeking help. In fact, the average person waits seven years after learning they have hearing loss before agreeing to try hearing aids.

In a study conducted by Forbes Health in 2024, the number one reason people reported not wearing hearing aids was the cost. The second most common reason was stigma. Many people are concerned about the association between hearing aids and aging or disability. In fact, 66% of respondents said they would be more willing to wear hearing aids if they were invisible. While the hearing aid industry has worked hard to improve the appearance of hearing aids and has come a long way in packing advanced technology into increasingly smaller devices, we have not yet arrived at completely invisible hearing aids.

There are, however, many important things to consider about hearing aids beyond their appearance. Hearing aids are proven to improve quality of life and overall well-being by supporting a healthy social life. They can help people regain confidence in conversations and reduce feelings of loneliness and depression. One major sign of hearing loss is social withdrawal. Over time, this can lead to declines in both mental health and cognitive function due to reduced stimulation and social interaction. Today’s hearing aids are equipped with technology that helps filter out background noise and improve speech clarity far better than devices of the past, giving wearers the best chance at effective communication.

In my own hearing clinic, I regularly hear reasons why people are not ready to try hearing aids. Many respond by saying they “aren’t quite there yet” or are still “far too active” to be wearing them. My favourite response is to challenge those assumptions by showing clients my own hearing aids and reminding them that I’ve been wearing them since I was 28 years old. I play slo-pitch while wearing them and I continue to live an active lifestyle as a new mom. While I’m not here to force anyone into purchasing hearing aids, I do enjoy helping to break down the stigma surrounding them by sharing my own experience. Hearing aids are not just for the elderly!

I firmly believe that no one should invest in hearing aids until they are ready to commit to wearing them, but I will always encourage a hearing aid trial. A trial allows people to experience firsthand what hearing aids can do for them. It also gives me the opportunity to demonstrate just how many adjustments and fine-tuning options are available to make hearing aids comfortable and effective for each individual client. All too often, we hear stories of people who purchase hearing aids, become frustrated, and leave them in a drawer. Hearing aids require an adjustment period for the brain, as well as ongoing support from a hearing care professional to tailor the settings to the wearer’s needs. Once clients experience the real benefits hearing aids can provide, the stigma surrounding them often becomes much less important.

People of all ages—even those without hearing loss—can help break down the stigma by encouraging loved ones to seek hearing healthcare when they are struggling to hear. Individuals with hearing loss are more likely to seek help when they feel supported rather than feeling like a burden or an annoyance to those around them.

If you’ve ever met one of our local ENT specialists in Thunder Bay, Dr. Hassan, and he has recommended hearing aids, you’ve likely heard him say, “When you can’t see, you get glasses. If you can’t hear, you get hearing aids.” It sounds like such a simple concept, but the stigma surrounding hearing aids often prevents people from trying something that could significantly improve their lives.

Starting with a free, no-obligation hearing aid trial is one of the best ways to discover how hearing aids feel, what they can do for you, and how little attention most people actually pay to them. You may even find that friends and family are excited to communicate more easily with you again! Book a hearing test at Sound Hearing and let us help you get back on the road to communicating with confidence.
